About

Rabz Lansiquot (they/them) is interested in creating work that explores personal stories in a wider socio-cultural context. They pursued Social Anthropology academically, and their visual work draws on this interest to explore alternative narratives through photography and filmmaking. Rabz describes feeling disinterested in art that does not have any relevant social or political context and so wants to create work that documents experiences that are often ignored in a way that is accessible and thought-provoking.

Rabz’ piece for the Baldwin’s Nigger Reloaded event is a short fine art film piece exploring the complex process of whitewashing and it’s effect on young people. This work stems from their own experience of being called names such as ‘colour confused’ and ‘oreo’, by both black and white people, due to not adhering to stereotypes of a black woman. The film is an abstract representation of this extremely personal and emotional process, encountered by many other people of colour in predominantly white contexts.
