About

Padilha studied Fine Art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, Fine Art Exchange at the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and he completed his studies in 1997 with an MA in Fine Art from the Chelsea College of Art & Design in London. His practice crosses the mediums of drawing, film-making, and sculptural installation. The artist lives in London and Amsterdam.

Central to Padilha’s practice is the process of arrangement/rearrangement within different physical spaces. His new ceramic series will be further developed in a residency in Brazil, 2016 with Grupo Uirapuru, an orchestral group that uses instruments made from clay and invites musicians and visual artists to collaborate with them.

Iniva has worked closely with Padilha in the past, hosting artist in residency program along with a subsequent exhibition that interrogated aspects of the artist’s identity defined by growing up on the border of Uruguay and Brazil. The work also explored how icons become invested with cultural, social and political meanings that often belie their origins.
