Richard J. Powell is John Spencer Bassett Professor at the Department of Art History at Duke University, North Carolina. He studied Fine Arts at Morehouse College and Howard University before completing his PhD in Art History at Yale University. His research and teaching interests lie in American art, African American art, theories of race and representation in the African diaspora and the conceptualizations of “folk” in world art. His books include Homecoming: The Art and Life of William H. Johnson (1991) and Black Art and Culture in the 20th Century (1997).
