About

Nancy Hynes is a writer, editor and occasional curator. She has a postgraduate degree in anthropology (Cambridge, UCSD). In 1994, she moved to the UK to pursue research on West African artists living and working in London. She has written for specialist and generalist publications (African Arts, NKA: Journal of Contemporary African Art, Prospect, the Financial Times), lectured at museums and galleries (SOAS, Cambridge, Birkbeck, Photographer’s Gallery, British Museum, Tate Modern), and is interested in communicating ideas about culture, history, art and the negotiation of identities to a wide audience.

Her interests include photography, music, and interrogating notions of identity and ethnicity in the representation of artists work, particularly artists from the African continent or the African diaspora. She co-curated the exhibition Depth-of-Field, exhibiting the work of a Lagos-based photographic collective, in 2005 at the South London Gallery. She also works as an academic editor and is pursuing an MA in creative writing at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
