Artist, Writer

Ming Lin

About

Ming Lin is a writer, researcher and artist whose work examines the poetics of production and circulation, particularly the slippages that occur as synthetising new forms of agency.

Together with Alexandra Tatarsky, Ming Lin  presented “DREPM THE WOELD: The Shanzhai Lyric” in 2018 as part of the Stuart Hall Library Research Network programme, entitled ‘Virtualities’. The Shanzhai Lyric is a body of research focusing on radical logistics and linguistics through the prism of technological aberration and nonofficial cultures.  Lin and  Tatarsky investigate bootleg and copy culture, the poetics of mistranslation and nonstandard languages. After undertaking fieldwork in the summer of 2015 to collect ecstatic phrases found on T-shirts in Beijing, their conception of the Shanzhai Lyric was first elaborated in The New Inquiry as a way to think through otherness, commodity, failure and longing churned through global networks of fast fashion production. They have subsequently developed these ideas in publications and performance pieces in London, Detroit, and New York City.

Ming Lin’s written works are featured in LEAP, Art in America, and ArtAsiaPacific magazines. Lin studied art history and anthropology in Montreal and is based in London.
