About

Lina Selander is an innovative moving image and installation artist from Sweden.

Selander’s films and installations can be read as compositions or thought models, where ideas and conditions are explored and weighed. She examines relationships between memory and perception, photography and film, and language and image.  Often a focus in her work is moments in history in which tectonic shifts have taken place in the downfall of political or economic systems, and the emergence of new ones in its place.

Characteristic of Selander’s work is the use of film to build dense layers of images and meaning, through which contemporary society is connected to history and the pre-historic. At the core of her enquiry lies a continuous questioning of the concept and materiality of the image. Selander’s work repeatedly asks us to reconsider the status of the image – as representation, memory, object, imprint or surface – and our relationship to it.

In 2015, Iniva presented a solo exhibition of three film works by Lina Selander, juxtaposed with a parallel exhibition by Park Chan-Kyong, bringing together synergies within the artists’ practices. Both artists move between documentary forms and the structure of the visual essay as a way to investigate the construction of collective imaginations.

Lina Selander’s solo shows include Kunst Haus Wien; Argos – Centre for Art and Media, Brussels; Iniva, London; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; VOX – Centre de l’image contemporaine, Montréal. She was the Swedish representative at the Venice Biennale 2015. A selection of her group shows include: The Kyiv Biennale 2015; Seoul Media City Biennale 2014; Manifesta 2012 in Belgium.

Lina Selander lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.
