Aubrey Williams was born in 1926 in Georgetown, Guyana. He came to Europe in 1952 and settled in London in 1954, where he briefly studied at St. Martin’s School of Art. He started showing his work in numerous exhibitions throughout the 1950s and the early 1960s. Aubrey Williams was one of the founding members of the Caribbean Artists Movement (1966-72) and had a pioneering role in the development of black visual culture in Britain, which was to have an inestimable influence on the British art scene for the next fifteen years. Since then his works have been exhibited internationally. In the UK his work was included in exhibitions at the Royal Festival Hall in 1984 and at the Commonwealth Institute in 1981 and in 1984. Shortly before his death in April 1990, his work was represented in the group exhibition “The Other Story” held at the Hayward Gallery.
