Thomas Hirschhorn was born in Bern, in the German speaking part of Switzerland. Between 1978 and 1983 he studied at the Schule fr Gestaltung in Zurich. Since his first solo exhibition in 1986 at the Bar Floral in Paris, his sculptures, videos and installations have found a wide audience through a plethora of solo and group exhibitions in Central Europe and the United States. In recent years Hirschhorn made use of a unique ‘vocabulary’ of materials: tape, cardboard, gold and silver aluminium foil, mirrors, plastic, vintage television monitors, and scraps of wood. He has come to the attention of critical writers, such as Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, for his irreverent approach to consumer culture and scathing critique of our global world. Hirschhorn lives and works in Paris, France.
