Walker Evans’ black and white photographs taken in the American South and urban New York have had iconic status in the United States for a long time. For this very reason they became the subject of the critical discourse on the role of photography in the establishment of national identity. Walker Evans was also an editor of Time and of Fortune magazine and held a professorship for Graphic Arts at Yale School of Art.
