Art critic and cultural theorist Geeta Kapur talks about ‘Practice’ in relation to her long experience of writing about modern and contemporary art from India and internationally. Of ‘Practice’, Kapur says:
Certain forms of practice are paradigmatic: artisanship, performance drills, sport. Each of these works by repetition and rehearsal, leading to effortless gesture, perfected act, virtuoso effect.
Much has been staked by modernism on de-skilling the hand; and what manner of ruse is concealed in that claim!
By calling in outsiders, performers, conceptual artists, contemporary art ruptures aesthetic protocols. On other planes, it is partial to found objects; and covets the informal and the formless and more such detritus of the unconscious. This peculiar form of ‘objecthood’ makes practice a mutational process.
Yet, practice as praxis is committed to radical cause and determinate purpose. A bridge between means and ends, practice, thus imbricated, demonstrates to artist and critic ‘where the stress falls’.
Practice is also presented in relation to the Keywords exhibition and events programme presented at Rivington Place from 27 March until 18 May 2013. Keywords looks at how changes in the meaning of words reflect the cultural shifts in our society. It is presented by Iniva in partnership with Tate Liverpool and is based on Raymond Williams’ seminal text – Keywords: a vocabulary of culture and society.
