Anna Boghiguian & Goshka Macuga: Tagore's Universal Allegories

Western Artists and India

10 Oct 2013

Writer and curator Shanay Jhaveri discusses Western artists inspired by their visits to India

Shanay Jhaveri is the author of the recently published book, Western Artists and India. The book identifies the cross-cultural exchanges that took place between India and the West after decolonisation, with its primary focus on important American and European artists and designers who travelled to India post independence and created works inspired by their visits. Their journeys serve as the conduit to an examination of the growth of Indian Modernism and rare moments of local patronage.

He is also the editor of Outsider Films on India: 1950 – 1990, an exploration of ten European films and documentaries on India spanning 40 years from the country’s independence.

Shanay Jhaveri graduated from Brown University in 2007 with a degree in Art-Semiotics and the History of Art and Architecture. He is currently a research fellow at the Royal College of Art, London.
