Reading group

A chance to discuss the issues surrounding participation, engagement, collaboration and social practice through a dynamic walking reading event.

For each session, some texts will be set in advance, and will form the backbone of the exchange. We will depart from Rivington Place and walk for up to an hour, swapping conversations and partners several times. Apart from the discussed texts and personal experiences, art projects related to the area will form our dialogues.

The selection of texts and the applied dynamic methodology is an attempt to view beyond the binary logic of Socially Engaged Art practices, which often oppose participation to exclusion, nature to culture, thus subject to object.

Facilitated by Ania Bas and Simone Mair, supported by MFA Curating, Goldsmiths.

Ania Bas (b. 1981, Poland) is an artist who works with people not canvas. Ania’s practice is social, dialogical, interdisciplinary and inspired by everyday life. Bas’ practice investigates connections with places and people and takes forms of events, performances, actions and interventions. The works often have their second life as texts, visual essays and publications.
Bas’ practice takes place in live environments rather than in a studio. She works with groups and individuals, businesses, schools, galleries, markets. Bas was a resident artist at Whitechapel Gallery London, Yorkshire Artspace in Sheffield, The New Art Gallery Walsall, Ridley Road Market in London, Disonancias, Bilbao in Basque Country and Vestas Blades on the Isle of Wight.

Simone Mair (b.1981, Italy) is a cultural producer who operates between education and curatorial practice, based in London. Her actual research is focused on Socially Engaged Art practices in rural areas. She has worked at public art institutions as Museion, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and as curatorial assistant at the Kunstverein ar/ge kunst Galerie Museum, Bolzano. She coordinated the set-up of the private ADNCollection in Italy and is now completing her MA in Curating at Goldsmiths, London.
