Join us for a hands-on workshop inspired by DIY culture, dancehall fashion and adornment practices.
Facilitated by Maya Scarlette, participants are invited to customise personal items while exploring the role of styling and self-expression within dancehall culture.
The session will consider fashion as both creative expression and cultural language, drawing connections between dancehall aesthetics, making cultures and diasporic forms of self-styling.
About the Facilitators
Maya Scarlette
Maya Scarlette is a fashion designer based in London.
She is a self-taught fashion designer whose work explores creativity across multiple disciplines, including custom design, carnival costume, red carpets, music videos, and editorial styling. Her practice is rooted in craftsmanship and storytelling, bringing bold, expressive concepts to life through wearable art.
As a designer with ectrodactyly, her lived experience deeply informs her creative perspective. She is passionate about challenging traditional standards within the fashion industry and advocating for greater representation and inclusivity for the disabled community.
Over the years, Maya has collaborated on a range of dynamic projects, contributing to visually striking music videos and editorial features, while continuing to build a distinctive voice within the fashion space. A recent highlight of her journey includes showcasing her work at the V&A Museum as part of the Design and Disability exhibition, marking an important milestone in her evolving career.
Through her work she aims to celebrate individuality, culture, and imagination, while breaking barriers and redefining what it means to be seen and represented in fashion.
