Opportunities

Volunteer at iniva

Are you looking for experience working in libraries? We need you!

We are looking to recruit four in-person volunteers to support the activities of Stuart Hall Library. This is a tailor-made volunteering experience to support personal interests in contemporary art, visual cultures and future professional interests in working in libraries.

Who is this for?

Our volunteering programme is for:

  • individuals seeking experience before/after embarking on a professional qualification in library studies;
  • those in the community, in retirement or students with an interest in international visual art and culture;
  • students who have a research interest in Stuart Hall Library collections; and
  • anyone looking to gain reception/front-of-house skills, public speaking skills, or bookshop experience.

What tasks will you get up to?

  • Re-shelving library collections
  • Researching new acquisitions
  • Providing tours of the collection
  • Learning about cataloguing library collections
  • Learning about iniva’s exhibitions
  • Contribute to iniva’s blog and social media
  • Promoting iniva’s publications
  • Support events programming

What will you gain?

You will gain valuable insight into how a specialist research library collection is managed, organised and utilised in exhibitions and programming.

You will learn to catalogue library material; reshelve books according to a classification system; build knowledge of library collecting; and key research skills.

You will be able to provide library tours, assist with library enquires, create reading lists or presentations about a specific subject, provide basic event support, participate in reading groups and contribute content for our blog and social media channels about our collections.

What skills do you need?

No prior experience is needed. You should be interested in Stuart Hall Library collections and willing to learn more about art libraries.

Training

We require all volunteers to attend a 2-hour induction session and supervised training regarding tasks will be provided.

Expenses

Travel and lunch expenses up to £10 per day will be reimbursed by BACS transfer with a valid receipt.

Commitment

One day per week on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday (days can be flexible) for 6 months between 10 am – 5 pm from September 2024 – March 2025.

How to apply?

Please email Tavian Hunter, Library and Archive Manager at library@iniva.org with your CV in PDF format and statement (up to 300 words) explaining why you would like to be library volunteer at iniva? What skills you would like to gain? Which day and times are preferrable for you to volunteer?
