Iniva and ACE West Midlands Research Project
Encouraging young people from culturally diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in the visual arts
Purpose of research
Arts Council England West Midlands, in partnership with Iniva, is exploring a more strategic approach to engaging young people from diverse cultural backgrounds with the possibility of developing careers in the visual arts.
The underlying question is:
Can organisations develop a mentoring programme that targets young people from culturally diverse backgrounds and encourages them to consider and pursue careers in the visual arts when they might otherwise not have done so?
The key rationale for the work is to identify barriers that are specific to young people who are interested in the visual arts and are from different and culturally diverse backgrounds. The pilot mentoring programme will then consider whether appropriate interventions can be made to address these barriers, and look at how those interventions might be delivered.
