‘Recordings: a select bibliography of contemporary African, Afro-Caribbean and Asian British art’ is based on an archive of audio and video tapes, ephemera, books and exhibition catalogues focusing on the practice of black artists. It was established at Chelsea College of Arts in 1985.
The impetus for producing the publication and a consideration of its enduring importance is discussed in a new film. ‘A Conversation about Recordings’ features the publication’s co-editors Melanie Keen, Director/Chief Curator, Iniva, and Liz Ward, former Librarian of Chelsea College of Arts as they revisit the key concerns at the time.
Aiming to reflect the diversity of black British visual arts practice, ‘Recordings’ provides an invaluable resource for historical documentation and research worldwide into the work of African-Caribbean, Asian & African artists in Britain in the 1980s and 1990s.
