Acquired to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the Arts Council Collection, Keith Piper’s new commission will come to fruition in the autumn of 2016 in a major monographic exhibition at Bluecoat, Liverpool.
In his first major monographic show since ‘Relocating the Remains’ in 1997 (produced by the Institute of International Visual Arts, held at the Royal College of Art), Keith Piper brings his research and visual strategies to address contemporary concerns about the impacts of globalisation. In Unearthing the Banker’s Bones, Piper imagines the remnants of contemporary globalised capitalism, with its parallel ability to render commodities simultaneously ‘virtual’ and ‘hyper-material’, expressing power through the physical architecture of the urban landscape.
Presented as an immersive installation, the project includes a new three-screen video projection as the centrepiece and interrogates aspects of the contemporary moment through four chapters: environmental stress; human migration; new cartographies of capital; the ‘post’ body. Utilising science fiction as a means of interrogating the present, Unearthing the Banker’s Bones proposes an imagined future through the use of allegorical narrative.
Projected on a monumental scale, reminiscent of history paintings, the video will be surrounded by an array of sculptural, mixed media and interactive objects. These objects will exist as imagined archaeological and fossilised fragments of the present; broken and semi-functional technologies, textural fragments, petrified printed material, puzzles, clues, maps, games, casts, 3D printed objects, small video screens with ghostly distressed footage, broken speakers hissing fractured messages from the present, interactive playable devices with movable elements.
This new commission will form part of larger exhibition display, also entitled ‘Unearthing the Banker’s Bones’ and comprises both new and remastered works.
