Theme for Jan - June 2017: Virtualities, Part 1.

The Research Network is Stuart Hall Library’s public programme of monthly talks and events. It is a space for researchers, artists, academics, curators, students and activists to meet and discuss aspects of their practice.

We are looking for proposals for the new 2017 series, launching in February. The deadline for submitting proposals is 3rd January.

African Diaspora Artists in the 21st Century (ADA21)

A film project, soon to be available to view in the library, featuring a set of ten interviews with artists: Larry Achiampong, Barby Asante, Nicola Thomas, Thomas J Price, Nicola Frimpong, Harold Offeh, Phoebe Boswell, Cedar Lewisohn, Kimathi Donkor and Barbara Walker. The project is curated by Paul Goodwin and commissioned by the Cultural Institute, King’s College London.

Tangled Yarns – exploring the politics of the textile supply chain through time

Artist Alke Schmidt and curator and Manager of the William Morris Gallery Anna Mason will discuss the exhibition Tangled Yarns which explores the socio- economic impacts of the textile industry past and present and reveal how the industry is intertwined with issues of race and gender, exploitation and violence.

Dr Alice Correia and artist Nina Edge will explore the contributions made by Asian diaspora artists to British art during the 1980s and 90s as well as Nina’s practice to the present day, including social engagement projects relating to housing in Liverpool.

A discussion of the issues and experiences behind setting up pavilions for two previously unrepresented nations at the Venice Biennial. The first Roma Pavilion was established in 2007 and the first Seychelles Pavilion in 2015.
